Do I need a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) to rent a boat?
Renting a boat in Canada is easier than you think, but the requirements vary depending on whether the boat is motorized and whether you're operating it yourself. Here's what you need to know about the Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) before renting through boatUnity.
Boats without engines
For non-motorized boats such as kayaks, paddleboards, or canoes, no license is typically required in Canada. However, the boat owner may require that you wear a life jacket or take a basic safety briefing or course. Always check the specific requirements listed by each owner on boatUnity.
Boats with engines
- With a captain (co-sailing): No PCOC is needed. You’re not expected to steer the vessel, so the licensed captain remains in charge of navigation.
- Without a captain: A valid Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) is mandatory. As a renter, you are required to upload your PCOC to your profile before renting. Owners will verify your certification before approving any booking.
Note for tourists staying less than 45 consecutive days in Canada: You are allowed to operate a motorized pleasure craft (even with an electric or under 10 HP motor) if you hold a recognized proof of competency from your country of residence (e.g., a French or European boating license). You must also be able to show proof that you are not a Canadian resident (e.g., foreign residency documentation).
