Boating License vs Operator Card: Know the Difference
These two terms can indeed be confusing, so it's important to clarify the difference between them. Understanding this distinction is key to staying compliant and safe on Canadian waters.
Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)
Often referred to as a boating license, the pleasure craft operator card (PCOC) is a certification proving that you’ve completed a boating safety course and are legally authorized to operate a motorized vessel in Canada. It’s mandatory for all operators of motorized pleasure crafts.
Pleasure Craft License
The pleasure craft license, on the other hand, is the official identification number displayed on both sides of a boat. In emergencies, it helps search and rescue teams quickly access key information about the vessel. Any pleasure craft with a motor of 10 HP or more must be licensed. The license is free and valid for ten years.
